Vision Expo West 2015

What comes to mind when you think of September? Football weekends? Maybe it’s one last beach vacation before the weather changes? How about Vision Expo West (VEW) in Las Vegas?

If the Expo isn’t on your list, consider this: it should be. Don’t worry, it wasn’t on my list for a long time either, but as of this year, that has changed. Earlier in the year, I took part in my first Vision Expo East and loved it! Now I’m ready to give West a try! Here are some of my reasons why I’m excited to attend Vision Expo West for the first time (and I have a strong suspicion it won’t be my last)!

1. The Young Professionals Club

Vision Expo’s Young Professionals Club, or YPC, is a unique benefit that isn’t found at other optometric professional meetings. For the first five years after graduation, new grads are able to be a part of this group and receive major perks when attending the Expo, both East and West.

First of all, members get FREE registration that includes SIX hours of continuing education, exhibit hall access, and entry into all YPC events that take place at the meeting! I don’t know about you, but that is an awesome arrangement in my eyes.

For this year’s VEW, new grads will have three main events to choose from:

  1. The Young Professionals Lunch on Friday
  2. Young Professionals Club Member Reception on Friday
  3. Club Crawl on Saturday night that will allow time to mingle with your friends while visiting three Vegas hot spots.

It truly is a fantastic mix of work and play! You can explore what the YPC has to offer, join, and see a schedule of events for VEW 2015 here.

2. Great Events!

Outside of the YPC, Vision Expo also offers a ton of receptions, parties, and events for attendees to network and have fun at. A few examples include…

  • alumni receptions
  • ODs on Facebook Party Friday evening
  • the opening night party featuring Bad Habits “Eye Docs of Rock” on Thursday
  • the Marchon Club Party at Paris on Friday night
  • the optician event Saturday night for your staff member(s)

All of these give ODs an opportunity to get to know their colleagues better while relaxing after a long day of exploring the exhibit halls and taking in some CE.

3. Unique Exhibit Hall and Education

When attending a conference such as VEW, it is important to know that you’ll get something out of your time at the exhibit hall and in CE classes. Based upon the extensive list of CE options, including medical, optical, practice management, and other topics, I am confident that finding a class that interests me won’t be a problem.

Beyond the education, Vision Expo has broken its exhibit hall into 4 main categories:

  • medical and scientific
  • lenses and processing technology
  • eyewear and accessories
  • low vision

4 hours of CE for FREE! You can get up to 6 hours for free!

This organization style allows the attendee to focus on companies that can truly be of benefit without wandering the entire show floor searching for those booths. You can plan your strategy for getting the most out of the exhibit hall with the help of this map.

4. Location and Travel

It’s not hard to convince anyone that Vegas can be a great time….. but that experience is kicked into high gear when you’re getting to go for a purpose and doing so with awesome trip discounts! VEW has worked to provide attendees with significant price cuts on hotels, shuttle service to and from the conference, and discounted flights with Delta and United.

If you need to rent a car, you can also get a deal from Dollar and Avis through the show’s arrangements. The promo codes are available on the Vision Expo website. If you want to catch a show while you’re there, make sure you see the list of entertainment discounts VEW has provided before you go.

As you can see, Vision Expo West is shaping up to be a remarkable meeting. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to check it out for myself, network, and have a little fun! I hope you’ll consider being there; it’s one you don’t want to miss!!! For an idea of what East was like this year, check out our article from April 2015 for some insight!
