NGO interviewed three new grad Vision Source ® practice owners, who have graduated from optometry school within the last 6 years and pursued their goals of practice ownership.

These practices are geographically diverse, yet the challenges and hopes for independent optometry are all similar.

They are all a part of Vision Source’s network of 3100+ independent doctors. Here is what they had to say:

1.What is your biggest challenge as a new grad practice owner?

Dr. Yupheng Ly

“The location where I wanted to settle down already had a wealth of great eyecare providers, including many retail and large ophthalmology groups. I had to find ways to establish a presence and differentiate myself as an independent optometrist.”

Dr. Yupheng Ly, Elite Family Eye Care, Hickory, NC

“Learning about every detail needed to run an office, from insurance billing and credentialing, to ordering supplies, it’s difficult to keep up with everything there is to do.”

Dr. Kara Ramsey, EyeCare for You, Apex, NC

“The biggest challenge overall is working with insurances. It takes a lot of hours every week to look up patient benefits, help patients understand their benefit breakdown and optimize their benefits, submit and follow up on claims, determine which insurances use which labs, etc all while trying to serve our patients. There is a lot to navigate with both vision and medical payers. It can be frustrating.”

Dr. Jessica Yannelli, Precision Eye Care, Downington, PA

2.What is the single biggest challenge to optometry in the future? What are you doing to combat this challenge in your practice?

Dr. Kara Ramsey

“Online sales and corporate optometry. Educating patients about the quality of eyewear and the benefits they get from being properly fitted for glasses. We only offer top quality glasses and stand behind everything we sell.”

Dr. Kara Ramsey, EyeCare for You, Apex, NC

“It is going to be a big challenge to bring new graduates into private practice. New grads with large loan payments need steady incomes to cover the payments plus the cost of living. I think if the cost of education continues to rise it will be harder and harder for new graduates to make the initial sacrifices that private practice often requires (whether you are hired by another private Dr. or go out on your own). This challenge will be compounded by increasing numbers of new graduates from newer schools of optometry. I’m going to work hard to make my practice a success so that I can help bring new grads into the fold and do my bit to preserve independent optometry!”

Dr. Jessica Yannelli, Precision Eye Care, Downington, PA

3.What is your best advice to new graduates in private practice?

Dr. Jessica Yanelli

“Keep at it–take great care of patients and don’t forget to keep a pulse on the inner workings of the business aspects of what we do. This includes watching your costs and being selective about companies, products, equipment, and insurances you work with.”

Dr. Jessica Yannelli, Precision Eye Care, Downington, PA

“The essence of private practice is being able to do things your way. I definitely encourage graduates to practice optometry the way they want, whether it’s getting involved with clinical trials, specializing in vision therapy, or having a responsibility in business management.”

Dr. Yupheng Ly, Elite Family Eye Care, Hickory, NC

“Don’t let your student loans hinder you from opening a new practice.”

Dr. Kara Ramsey, EyeCare for You, Apex, NC

4. Why did you join Vision Source ®?

“Vision Source® was created to support and sustain independent optometry. After hearing from the leadership and seeing their passion in defending independent optometry, I knew they shared the desire to see a small practice like us succeed.”

Dr. Yupheng Ly, Elite Family Eye Care, Hickory, NC

“Start up advice and equipment discounts.”

Dr. Kara Ramsey, Eyecare For You, Apex, NC

“To benefit from organized resources (training and products) and the experiences of my peers. Vision Source® doctors support each other and understand that we are all working hard toward a single goal: great care of our patients in private optometry. Joining Vision Source was a smooth experience. A Vision Source representative met with me in person to talk about the details before I joined. That person stayed with me through the whole process and helped with any questions or issues that arose. They were very professional and provided me with checklists to keep me on track with the things I needed to do. I really appreciated that because it was one less thing to worry about. Everything was up and running within weeks.

Dr. Jessica Yannelli, Precision Eye Care, Downington, PA

5. What are some beneficial reasons to join Vision Source ®?

“I’ve appreciated the network of local doctors that can relate and resolve issues that I encounter as a young business owner.”

Dr. Yupheng Ly, Elite Family Eye Care, Hickory, NC

“Advice from other OD’s and their support of independent optometry.”

Dr. Kara Ramsey, EyeCare for You, Apex, NC

“Having other professionals to reach out to who have been through it all. Vision Source also helps control the cost of goods through buying groups which will help private practitioners compete with corporate entities and does so by providing a national network of professionals that patients can recognize and identify with. We have been participating in the Optical Dream and we love it. The education resources have been beneficial for me and my staff because we like to learn about different approaches to the optical and what we are doing right and where we can improve. The competition has also been a great morale booster and a fun way to end the week. I have also used the doctor’s office outreach kits to share my information with other local doctors: PCPs, dentists, nurses, urgent care centers. They are put together so professionally. I was happy to get my practice’s name out there and to network with other offices. Without the kit, I’m not sure if I would have just walked in the door to a lot of those places! I have also had a few patients come to me just because I am a part of Vision Source. Most of these patients are people who have relocated from other towns or have been vacationing in our area and have had past or current experiences with other Vision Source practices.”

Dr. Jessica Yannelli, Precision Eye Care, Downington, PA
